INSULATION INSTALLATION FOR CO₂ PIPING SYSTEMS IN BREWERIES: AN EFFECTIVE PROTECTION SOLUTION

By Phuc Hoang . March 13, 2025 | News

In the brewing industry, the CO₂ system plays a crucial role in ensuring product quality and operational efficiency. CO₂ is not only an essential component that contributes to the beer’s body and distinctive flavor but also participates in fermentation, cooling, and preservation processes.

However, to maintain the stable and efficient operation of the CO₂ piping system, insulation is a critical technical requirement that cannot be overlooked. This article will analyze the necessity of insulating CO₂ piping systems and introduce the solution implemented by Black Cat Insulation Technical JSC (Stock Code: BMK) for the extension project of a CO₂ pipeline system at a major brewery in Southeast Asia.

1. Why is insulation necessary for the CO₂ transportation system?

Maintaining Stable Temperature

CO₂ in the piping system must be kept in a stable state to ensure continuous production. Without proper insulation, CO₂ may be lost or experience pressure fluctuations, affecting its efficiency and increasing operational costs

Minimizing Freezing and Condensation in Piping Systems

When CO₂ transitions from a gaseous to a liquid state, storing liquid CO₂ at low temperatures can cause surface freezing on the pipeline due to moisture condensation from the surrounding air. This ice formation can obstruct flow or lead to pipeline cracking due to uneven thermal expansion.

Additionally, when the ambient temperature is higher than that of the CO₂ pipeline, moisture in the air can condense on the pipe surface. This phenomenon not only results in energy loss but also increases the risk of pipeline corrosion, reducing system longevity and leading to higher maintenance costs

Ensuring operational safety

Liquid CO₂ exists at extremely low temperatures, and direct contact with the skin can cause cold burns. In the event of a leak, gaseous CO₂ can accumulate in enclosed areas, reducing oxygen levels and posing a serious hazard to operating personnel. Insulation helps minimize the risk of direct contact with cold piping and mitigates the impact of gas leaks, preventing incidents that could disrupt the production process.

2. Black Cat Insulation Technical JSC’s insulation solution

In recent years, Black Cat Insulation Technical Joint Stock Company has supplied pre-formed insulation materials and executed insulation installation for various breweries. Notably, the company provided insulation solutions for the CO₂ pipeline expansion project of a Dutch EPC contractor at one of the largest breweries in Southeast Asia.

This project utilized pre-formed Polyisocyanurate (PIR) cold insulation combined with a metal cladding system, optimizing thermal performance and ensuring long-term durability for the piping system.

Pre-Formed PIR insulation material

For this project, Black Cat JSC utilized Polyisocyanurate (PIR) cold insulation from the Kingspan brand, sourced from Belgium. PIR operates within a temperature range of -180°C to +120°C (-292°F to +248°F) and meets the EN 13501:2018 fire resistance standard – Class C – s3, d0. Additionally, PIR offers high mechanical strength, effectively minimizing heat loss. With its closed-cell structure, this material provides excellent moisture resistance, preventing condensation in high-humidity environments.

Furthermore, using pre-formed PIR insulation for pipes and fittings such as elbows, valves, and tees significantly reduces installation time while ensuring high precision, thanks to advanced CNC cutting technology. As a result, the project was completed on schedule while still meeting optimal insulation performance requirements.

Metal insulation cladding

The outer protective layer of the insulation system is made of aluminum, enhancing durability and mechanical resistance. Additionally, the metal cladding shields the insulation layer from environmental factors such as dust, water, and chemicals, helping to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the piping system.

The metal insulation cladding used in these projects is pre-fabricated at Black Cat JSC’s manufacturing facility. The components are produced using CNC machines and advanced equipment imported from Germany, ensuring high precision and superior aesthetics. This pre-fabrication process not only improves product quality but also reduces on-site installation time, maximizing overall project efficiency.
